De Quevain Disease

What is de Quevain disease?
Also known as Quervain tenosynovitis, is an inflamatory condition that affect the 1st dorsal wrist sliding.

What is the 1st dorsal wrist sliding?
It´s a fibrous structure which forms a tunnel, located at the dorsal aspect of the wrist.
The 1st dorsal slide contains 2 tendons which perform the separation and extension movements of the thumb.

What are the symptoms?
The first and principal symtom is the pain on the slide, that increased when we touch them or when the patient move the thumb against a force.

What is the medical treatment?
– Antiinflammatory drugs.
– Splints to immobilize the thumb.
– Physical therapy.

What about the surgical treatment?
It´s a simple surgery that open the tunnel (dorsal 1st sliding).

What is the recovery time?
The patient starts to move the thumb inmediatly after the surgery, and she/he can return to their daily activities over a period of two weeks.
